NHS dental crowns UK 2026: Band 3 cost GBP 332.10, materials, waiting times, and private options

NHS dental crowns in England cost GBP 332.10 under Band 3 (April 2026). Understand NHS crown materials, England vs devolved nations, private Emax and zirconia alternatives, and how Picasso Vietnam compares at GBP 232–246.

NHS dental crowns are available under Band 3 treatment, which costs GBP 332.10 in England (as of April 2026). NHS crowns are usually metal or porcelain-fused-to-metal. Private UK crowns cost GBP 600–1,200 for Emax ceramic or full-zirconia. Picasso Dental Clinic Vietnam charges GBP 232 for Emax and GBP 246 for zirconia crowns.

Dental crowns are one area where the NHS does provide a funded treatment option. Band 3 at GBP 332.10 in England covers crowns when they are clinically necessary. But the material used, the waiting time, and the aesthetic outcome of an NHS crown differ from what a private clinic delivers with Emax or full-zirconia. This page explains both routes clearly.

What a dental crown is

A crown is a cap that fits over a prepared tooth to restore its shape, strength, and function. It is used when:

  • A tooth is too damaged or decayed to hold a filling
  • A tooth has been root-canal treated and needs protection
  • A tooth has fractured and cannot be restored with composite
  • A bridge is being made and an adjacent tooth needs crowning as an anchor

The crown preparation involves reducing the tooth in size on all surfaces, taking an impression, and fitting a temporary crown while the permanent one is made in a laboratory. The final crown is cemented at a second appointment.

NHS Band 3: what GBP 332.10 covers in England

Band 3 is the NHS charge for a crown, bridge, or denture when clinically necessary. The charge in England from April 2026 is GBP 332.10.

This is an important point: Band 3 is a course-of-treatment charge, not a per-crown charge. If your dentist places three crowns in a single course of NHS treatment, the total Band 3 charge is still GBP 332.10, not GBP 332.10 multiplied by three. This can represent good value when multiple teeth need crowning.

The Band 3 charge also includes all lower Band treatments. If you need a filling and an extraction before the crown, those are included at no extra charge within the same Band 3 course.

BandCharge (England, April 2026)Includes
Band 1GBP 27.90Examination, X-rays, scale and polish, preventive care
Band 2GBP 76.60Band 1, plus fillings, root canal treatment, extractions
Band 3GBP 332.10Bands 1 and 2, plus crowns, bridges, complete or partial dentures

These charges are specific to England. See below for devolved nations.

NHS crown materials: what to expect

NHS crowns are clinically effective, but the material choice differs from private practice.

Metal (full cast gold or base metal alloy): Highly durable, used mainly on back teeth. Visible as a silver or gold tooth, which some patients find aesthetically unacceptable on visible teeth.

Porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM): A metal substructure with a porcelain outer layer. More aesthetic than full metal but the metal margin can show at the gum line as a dark line, particularly as gums recede with age.

All-ceramic (zirconia or Emax): Used on front teeth in some NHS practices when the aesthetic need is clear. Not universally provided. Some NHS dentists use all-ceramic for front teeth; others do not, as full-ceramic requires a higher lab cost.

Under NHS commissioning, the dentist selects the material that is clinically appropriate. Patients cannot direct the choice of material within an NHS course of treatment, and cannot pay extra to upgrade to Emax or zirconia without converting to a private course of treatment.

England vs devolved nations: crown charges

Crown charges differ by nation. The clinical framework — what justifies a crown — is broadly similar across the UK, but the patient charge varies.

England: Band 3 is GBP 332.10 from April 2026. Multiple crowns in a course of treatment are covered by the single Band charge.

Scotland: NHS dentistry in Scotland is free for all NHS-registered patients. There is no Band 3 charge for NHS crowns in Scotland. The clinical criteria for what constitutes a clinically necessary crown apply equally.

Wales: NHS dental charges in Wales differ from England and are typically lower. The Band structure exists but the charge amounts are different.

Northern Ireland: Administered by the Business Services Organisation. Charges differ from England, and the Band framework is similar in principle.

Patients in Scotland may find that NHS crowns are effectively free for clinically necessary cases. Patients elsewhere in the UK pay Band 3 as set by their devolved administration.

Why patients seek private crowns

Some patients have NHS-eligible teeth but choose private crowns for specific reasons:

  • Material preference: Emax and full-zirconia crowns are tooth-coloured, translucent, and metal-free. No dark gum margins. This matters on front teeth and premolars.
  • Precision fit: Private labs typically have faster turnaround with digital workflows (CAD/CAM), and more material options including monolithic zirconia, which is very strong for back teeth grinding cases.
  • Single visit options: Some private practices offer same-day CEREC milled crowns, avoiding a temporary.
  • No NHS access: Many areas of England have long NHS waiting lists, and new NHS patients are not always accepted. Private treatment may be the only practical option.

Cost comparison: crowns in the UK vs Vietnam

For patients needing multiple crowns — for example, as part of a full smile makeover, after full-mouth reconstruction, or to replace old PFM crowns — the total saving can be substantial.

QuantityUK private (Emax, mid estimate)Picasso Vietnam
1 Emax crownGBP 800GBP 232
4 Emax crownsGBP 3,200GBP 928
8 Emax crownsGBP 6,400GBP 1,856

Estimated saving (8 crowns)~GBP 3,266

Flight estimate from London: GBP 726. Accommodation 7 nights Da Nang: GBP 552.

For patients needing only one or two crowns, the economics of flying to Vietnam are harder to justify unless the crown work is combined with other treatments such as veneers, whitening, or implant consultations.
