How many veneers do I need? Smile design for UK patients

The number of veneers depends on your smile line. Most patients need 6 to 10 upper front teeth. Read the full smile design guide with Picasso prices for 2026.

Most patients need 6 to 10 veneers on their upper front teeth. The exact number depends on your smile line: how many teeth are visible when you smile and talk naturally. Lower veneers are rarely needed. At Picasso Dental Clinic in Da Nang, 6 Emax Press veneers cost GBP 1,566 as of May 2026, compared with roughly GBP 4,200 at a UK private clinic.

Most patients need between 6 and 10 veneers on their upper front teeth. The right number depends on one thing: your smile line.

What is a smile line?

Your smile line is the number of teeth that are visible when you smile and speak naturally. Stand in front of a mirror, relax, and smile as you normally would in conversation. Count how many upper teeth you can see.

For most people that number is 6 to 10. The exact count depends on the width of your natural smile. A narrow smile may show only 4 to 6 teeth. A broad smile may show the second premolars, taking the visible count to 10.

Lower teeth are much less prominent. When you speak, the lower front teeth are partly visible, but they move rather than being a static backdrop. For this reason, lower veneers are rarely included in a smile makeover unless the lower arch is very visible or mismatched in colour.

Dr. Emily Nguyen, Founding Clinical Director at Picasso Dental Clinic, reviews all cosmetic smile plans before treatment proceeds. The starting point is always a natural smile photograph, not a posed grin.

The four most common veneer counts

6 upper veneers

This covers the two central incisors, two lateral incisors, and two canines. It is the most popular treatment plan. Six veneers address the teeth most visible in conversation and most photographs.

This plan suits patients with an average-width smile and no significant colour or shape concerns on the premolars.

8 upper veneers

Adding the two first premolars gives a broader smile zone. This is appropriate if your smile is noticeably wide and the premolars are clearly visible when you open your mouth to laugh.

Eight veneers is also common when teeth have been whitened in the past and the premolars have a noticeably different shade from the front six.

10 upper veneers

The second premolars are included for patients with a very wide natural smile. Ten veneers is the maximum practical treatment for the upper arch in most cases. It is less common and typically recommended only when those teeth are clearly visible in natural conversation.

4 upper veneers

Four veneers covering only the central and lateral incisors is a practical option for patients with a narrower smile or a tighter budget. It produces a natural-looking result as long as the canines and premolars do not contrast sharply with the new veneers.

Why odd numbers sometimes occur

Dentists do not always work in pairs. If one central incisor has an old discolouration and the tooth beside it does not, treating only one tooth risks a visible mismatch. The dentist may recommend treating both to ensure a consistent result.

Similarly, if a canine on one side is chipped, the matching canine on the other side is often included for symmetry, even if it does not strictly need restoration.

This is why some patients end up with 7 or 9 veneers rather than a tidy even number.

What about lower veneers?

Lower veneers are not commonly needed. The lower front teeth are partially visible during speech, but they rarely define the smile in the way the upper arch does.

Lower veneers are worth considering in two situations. First, if you are having a full-arch smile makeover and the lower teeth are significantly darker or more worn than the upper arch. Second, if your lower teeth are very prominent due to your bite or facial structure.

Adding lower veneers to a treatment plan increases cost and complexity. It is not a routine recommendation, and Dr. Emily Nguyen at Picasso will only suggest it if the clinical and aesthetic case is clear.

Composite bonding as an alternative

If only one or two teeth are visibly different in colour or shape, composite bonding may be a better starting point. Composite (GBP 87 per tooth at Picasso as of May 2026) is applied directly to the tooth without removing enamel. It has a shorter warranty of 6 months compared with 7 years for Emax Press porcelain veneers.

Composite bonding suits isolated chips, slight gaps, or minor colour differences. It is not suitable for full smile transformations where consistent colour and durability are the priority.

The wax-up and mock-up process

Before any tooth preparation takes place at Picasso, the clinical team creates a diagnostic wax-up. This is a physical or digital model of your planned smile. You see exactly what your teeth will look like before committing.

After approval, temporary veneers are placed so you can wear them for a few days before the final ceramics are made. This trial period lets you check comfort, speech, and appearance in real conditions. If anything needs adjusting, it is changed at this stage, not after the permanent veneers are fitted.

This two-stage process is the most important safeguard in cosmetic dentistry. It is standard practice in the Picasso smile design protocol.

Total cost including travel

Return flights from London to Da Nang run roughly GBP 650 to GBP 800 depending on season. A 14-night stay in a mid-range Da Nang hotel or serviced apartment typically costs GBP 600 to GBP 800.

For a 6-veneer case using Emax Press:

For comparison, 6 private veneers in the UK at GBP 700 each costs GBP 4,200, before any consultation or X-ray fees. Eight veneers at the same UK rate costs GBP 5,600.

UK versus Vietnam: what you are comparing

UK private veneer prices depend heavily on the clinic and location. London practices often charge GBP 900 to GBP 1,200 per tooth. Regional UK clinics may charge GBP 500 to GBP 800. The material specification and planning process varies.

At Picasso, the Emax Press ceramic is sourced from IPS e.max by Ivoclar, the same brand used by UK clinics at the upper end of the market. The material cost is not the main driver of the UK price premium.

The veneer trip to Picasso takes 10 to 14 days. Tooth preparation takes place on day 3 or 4. The lab fabricates the ceramics over 5 to 8 days. Final fitting is on day 13 or 14.

When to stay in the UK

Not every veneer case is suited to dental travel. Stay in the UK if:

  • Your bite needs correction before veneers. Orthodontic treatment takes 6 to 24 months and cannot be done during a short trip.
  • You have active gum disease. Veneers should not be placed on teeth with inflamed or receding gums. Treat the gum disease first, at your UK dentist.
  • You need only one or two veneers. The saving on a very small plan may not justify the cost of flights and a two-week stay.
  • You cannot take 14 days away. The veneer process at Picasso requires one continuous visit. It cannot be split across two short trips.

If your plan is 6 or more veneers and your gums are healthy, the financial case for Vietnam is significant.

How to find out exactly how many you need
