Hoi An recovery guide for dental patients from Da Nang

Can you stay in Hoi An while getting dental treatment in Da Nang? Distances, logistics, accommodation, and what the ancient town offers during dental recovery.

Yes, many dental patients base themselves in Hoi An for veneer or implant treatment at Picasso's Da Nang clinics. The journey is 30-45 minutes each way by Grab taxi and costs GBP 8-12 per trip. Hoi An's slow pace and beautiful old town make it particularly well suited to dental recovery, especially during the 5-8 day lab fabrication gap in veneer treatment.

Hoi An is 30km south of Da Nang and is one of Southeast Asia’s most atmospheric small towns. For dental patients who want a quieter, more charming base than Da Nang city, basing yourself in Hoi An is genuinely practical — provided you understand the logistics.

This guide covers how the arrangement works, what Hoi An offers during recovery, and the practical considerations before you commit to this base.

The logistics: Hoi An to Da Nang Picasso clinics

Distance: 30km from central Hoi An to central Da Nang. The two Da Nang Picasso branches (Hoang Dieu Street and Vinmec Hospital) are both in Da Nang proper.

Journey time: 30-45 minutes by Grab or taxi. Traffic on the main coastal road (Nguyen Tat Thanh) is generally light to moderate. Peak congestion in Da Nang can extend the journey to 50-55 minutes on weekday mornings, but this is not typical.

Cost: GBP 8-12 one way depending on your exact Hoi An starting point. A Grab booking from the Hoi An Old Town area to central Da Nang is approximately GBP 9-10 at the time of writing.

How to book: Use the Grab app. Open it from your Hoi An accommodation, enter your Da Nang clinic address as the destination, and accept the fixed-price quote. No cash negotiation, no uncertainty.

Return journey: Book a Grab for the return from outside the clinic. Alternatively, ask the clinic reception to help you book a return car if you are unfamiliar with the app.

When Hoi An works well as a dental base

Veneer lab fabrication period (5-8 days): This is the ideal time to be in Hoi An. After your preparation appointment in Da Nang, you have no clinic visits until the final bonding appointment. Five to eight days in Hoi An is a proper holiday. No trips to Da Nang required unless you choose to go.

Early recovery days after implant placement (days 2-5): After the intensity of surgery day and day 1 recovery, Hoi An’s calm pace suits gentle recovery well. You will need to return to Da Nang for your post-surgery check (typically day 3-4) but otherwise have no obligations. A single daily Grab trip to the clinic for a check and back is fully manageable.

Patients who want to combine a holiday with treatment: Hoi An is a more memorable destination than Da Nang for many visitors. If you want to come home with more than just dental records, Hoi An gives you a richer experience during the non-treatment days.

What Hoi An offers during dental recovery

The Ancient Town

Hoi An’s UNESCO-listed old town is one of the best-preserved historic trading towns in Southeast Asia. The streets are narrow, pedestrianised in the evenings, and lined with 300-year-old merchant houses, Chinese assembly halls, and small temples.

Walking the old town takes 1-2 hours at a relaxed pace. There are no hills, no strenuous climbs, and no intensity required. It is genuinely appropriate from day 1 of the veneer lab period or from day 2-3 of implant recovery (when walking is no longer contraindicated).

The Japanese Covered Bridge (Cầu Nhật Bản) at the western end of the old town is Hoi An’s signature sight. Built in the 1590s by the Japanese merchant community, it is small, photogenic, and worth the short walk.

The tailors

Hoi An is famous for custom tailoring. The old town and surrounding streets are lined with tailors who will produce custom-fitted clothing in 24-48 hours. Linen shirts, suits, dresses, and trousers are all available. The quality ranges from tourist-oriented to genuinely excellent — ask to see fabric swatches and finished examples before ordering.

This is a surprisingly appropriate dental recovery activity. It involves browsing, sitting for fittings, and light walking. No physical exertion.

Cycling paths

Hoi An has a network of flat cycling paths through rice fields and to nearby beaches. Bicycle hire costs GBP 1-2 per day. For veneer patients or implant patients from day 5-7 onward, a morning cycle through the surrounding countryside is one of the more pleasant recovery activities available anywhere.

For very recent implant patients (day 1-3), cycling is not recommended — bouncing on a bicycle seat and the physical effort could stress the surgical site.

Lantern festival evenings

On the 14th day of each lunar month, Hoi An Ancient Town holds a lantern festival. Electric lights in the old town are turned off, paper lanterns are lit, and the streets and riverside take on a genuinely magical quality. Many patients time their Hoi An stay around this date.

Check the lunar calendar for your travel dates before booking. The festival is not unique to one particular time of year — it happens every month.

The food

Hoi An has two dishes found almost nowhere else: Cao Lau and White Rose dumplings.

Cao Lau: Thick rice noodles made with water from a specific Hoi An well, served with sliced pork, herbs, and crispy crackers. Appropriate for veneer patients from day 2 onward (skip the crackers on day 1-2). For implant patients, the noodles are soft — eat the dish and leave the harder crackers.

White Rose dumplings (Bánh Vạc): Steamed rice flour dumplings with shrimp filling, entirely soft. An ideal post-dental recovery food and delicious.

Mi Quang noodles: The broader Central Vietnamese noodle dish, with a small amount of turmeric broth. Available throughout Hoi An.

Soft food is very easy to find in Hoi An. Almost every restaurant has pho, congee, and soft noodle soups.

My An Beach: the alternative base

Between Hoi An and Da Nang, at roughly the midpoint of the coastal road, lies My An Beach. This area — also referred to as the beach strip between Hoi An and Da Nang — has a cluster of resorts and hotels.

Staying at My An offers:

  • 15-20 minutes to Da Nang Picasso clinics (shorter than from Hoi An proper).
  • Quieter, less developed beach than My Khe.
  • Easy access to both Hoi An (20-25 minutes south) and Da Nang city centre (20-25 minutes north).

For patients who want beach-side accommodation but also want shorter clinic access, My An is a practical compromise. Hotel quality in this strip is generally good, at GBP 50-100 per night for international-standard resorts.

Practical considerations before choosing Hoi An as your base

Confirm your appointment schedule first. If your clinic schedule has appointment days close together, multiple 30-45 minute Grab trips per day adds up. For most veneer patients the schedule is clear: appointments on days 1-2, free lab gap, then appointment on day 12-13. For implant patients, a day 3-4 post-surgery check is standard. Know your schedule before booking accommodation.

Grab works reliably on this route. The Hoi An to Da Nang route is one of the most common Grab journeys in Central Vietnam. Drivers are familiar with it and it is booked through the standard app interface.

Allow travel time in your appointment diary. Leave 45-60 minutes before each appointment if departing from Hoi An to account for any traffic variation. Do not book a Grab 15 minutes before your appointment time.

Re-appointment situations: Occasionally a crown fitting requires a minor adjustment appointment on short notice (for example, if the shade needs to be remade). This is rare, but if it happens when you are based in Hoi An, a 30-45 minute Grab journey is required. Staying in Da Nang city for the final bonding day and the day after is an option worth considering even if you are otherwise based in Hoi An.

The recommendation

Hoi An as a base works best for:

  • Veneer patients during the 5-8 day lab fabrication period (no appointments, full freedom).
  • Patients whose treatment schedule has a clearly defined gap of 5+ days.
  • Anyone who finds Hoi An’s atmosphere more appealing than a beach hotel in Da Nang.
  • Implant patients in the later recovery days (day 5+), when appointments are less frequent.

Stay in Da Nang for:

  • Days with appointment or follow-up visits (to reduce logistics stress).
  • Days 1-3 post-implant surgery (reduce travel for the most restricted recovery period).
  • Patients whose schedule has frequent appointments with short gaps between them.

Many patients use both: stay in Da Nang for the first few appointment-dense days, then move to Hoi An for the lab fabrication period, then return to Da Nang for the final bonding appointment. This is entirely practical and the total logistics cost (Grab transfers) is modest.
