Da Nang dental recovery guide: what to do between appointments
What to do in Da Nang between dental appointments — beaches, Hoi An day trips, Ba Na Hills, Marble Mountains, and practical recovery tips for UK patients.
Da Nang is Vietnam's best dental tourism base because the 5-8 days of free time during veneer lab fabrication — or the recovery days after implant placement — can be spent comfortably at the beach, on day trips to Hoi An, or exploring the city at a relaxed pace. This guide covers what to do, when you can do it, and what to avoid.
Da Nang’s position as Vietnam’s best dental tourism destination is not just about having good clinics. It is about what happens on the days when you are not at the clinic.
Veneer patients have 5-8 days free between preparation and final bonding. Implant patients have recovery days that need to be filled gently. Da Nang provides a range of options calibrated to different energy levels and recovery stages.
The beach: My Khe and Non Nuoc
My Khe Beach is one of Vietnam’s finest urban beaches. It runs for approximately 30km along Da Nang’s eastern edge, is lined with hotels and restaurants, and is a 5-10 minute walk from most beach-area accommodation.
For veneer patients, beach time starts from day 1 of the lab period — no restrictions at all. Bring sunscreen, find a beach chair, and use the time as a genuine holiday.
For implant patients, gentle beach walking is appropriate from day 3. Avoid swimming in the sea for the first 3-5 days, as salt water can irritate the surgical wound. Swimming resumes after day 5 if healing is progressing well — confirm at your first post-surgery check.
Non Nuoc Beach is 10km south of My Khe, adjacent to the Marble Mountains. It is quieter, has fewer vendors, and has a more local feel. The water quality at both beaches is good.
Hoi An: the best day trip in Central Vietnam
Hoi An Ancient Town is 30km south of Da Nang and is the most popular day trip from the city. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site — a remarkably well-preserved trading port from the 15th-19th centuries, with Chinese, Japanese, and Vietnamese merchant influences visible in the architecture.
What you will find there:
- The Japanese Covered Bridge (400+ years old), lantern-lit streets, and temples.
- Tailors who produce custom-fitted clothing in 24 hours (bring fabric ideas or reference photos).
- Cao Lau noodles and White Rose dumplings — two dishes found only in Hoi An.
- Cycling paths through nearby rice fields.
- Evening lantern festival atmosphere along the Thu Bon River.
Getting there: Grab or taxi from Da Nang takes 30-45 minutes and costs GBP 8-12 one way. Book the return the same way — Grab is reliable throughout the route. The journey is entirely flat.
When to go: Any day during the lab fabrication period. For implant patients, from day 3 onward is comfortable — the day trip involves gentle walking with no strenuous activity required.
Practical note: Hoi An Ancient Town charges a small entrance fee of approximately GBP 2-3, which covers entry to a set number of heritage sites within the old town.
Marble Mountains (Ngũ Hành Sơn)
The Marble Mountains are a cluster of five limestone and marble hills located 10km south of Da Nang city centre, adjacent to Non Nuoc Beach. Each hill is named after one of the five classical elements.
The most visited hill (Thuy Son) has caves containing Buddhist and Hindu shrines, carved directly into the rock. There are two elevators for those who cannot manage stairs, and the main cave circuit involves moderate walking — some steps, but nothing strenuous.
Cost: Approximately GBP 1.50 entry plus GBP 0.50 for the elevator.
Recovery timing: Suitable from day 5 post-implant (there is some step-climbing). For veneer patients, suitable immediately.
What to expect: The caves are atmospheric and cool, which is welcome on a hot Da Nang day. The Buddha shrines are actively used — respectful quiet is appropriate in the cave temples. Allow 1.5-2 hours.
Non Nuoc Village adjacent to the site sells marble carvings and souvenirs. The carvings are heavy and impractical to bring home, but the craft is worth seeing.
Ba Na Hills
Ba Na Hills is Da Nang’s most spectacular day trip. It is a French colonial hilltop resort at 1,400 metres altitude, reached by one of the world’s longest cable car systems. The Golden Bridge — a walkway appearing to be held up by giant stone hands emerging from the mist — is one of Vietnam’s most photographed sites.
Cost: Approximately GBP 25-30 per person including cable car, all-day entry, and access to the theme park and rides on site.
Journey: Ba Na Hills is 25km west of Da Nang. Grab or taxi to the cable car base takes 30-40 minutes. The cable car ride is around 20 minutes each way.
Recovery benefit: The temperature at the summit is 5-7 degrees cooler than at sea level. For patients experiencing post-surgery swelling in the first few recovery days, the cooler air is a genuine comfort.
Recovery timing: Suitable from day 4-5 post-implant (cable car is all sitting). Suitable immediately for veneer patients. The park involves walking but no strenuous activity.
Practical note: Ba Na Hills is popular. Weekday visits are less crowded. Book the Grab journey in advance for the return as signal at the base can be variable.
Han River waterfront
Da Nang’s Han River runs through the centre of the city and its waterfront is one of the most pleasant urban walks in Vietnam. At night, the Dragon Bridge (Cau Rong) breathes fire on weekend evenings at 9pm — a spectacle worth timing around if you are in the city on a Saturday or Sunday.
The waterfront has street food vendors, restaurants, and coffee shops throughout. It is an easy, low-effort evening option from day 1 of recovery — no exertion, and street food noodle soups along the waterfront are appropriate post-treatment food.
Da Nang’s cafe culture is strong. Vietnamese coffee shops along the Han River and throughout the city offer cà phê trứng (egg coffee), iced milk coffee, and fruit teas — worth exploring during the lab period.
Shopping: Vincom Plaza and K-Market
Vincom Plaza: Da Nang’s main modern shopping mall, located centrally. It has international clothing brands, a cinema, and a supermarket. Good for stocking up on toiletries, picking up souvenirs, or spending an air-conditioned couple of hours on a very hot day.
K-Market and Vinmart: Vietnamese supermarkets with branches throughout the city. Useful for stocking your hotel room with recovery foods — yoghurt, soft packaged congee, bananas, tofu, and bottled water.
Han Market: A traditional covered market near the Han River. Good for Vietnamese coffee beans, dried goods, and lower-cost souvenirs. Requires some bargaining.
What NOT to do during recovery in Da Nang
A short list for implant patients specifically:
Days 1-3:
- No swimming in the sea (salt water can irritate the wound).
- No intense physical activity (running, gym, cycling hard).
- No hot environments (saunas, steam rooms, prolonged sun exposure in midday heat).
- No alcohol (first 3-5 days, particularly while on post-surgery antibiotics).
- No straw drinking.
All of Trip 1 recovery:
- Do not chew on the surgical side.
- Avoid hard, crunchy food at any meal.
Veneer patients have almost no restrictions from the day after fitting. The only long-term rule is to avoid biting directly into very hard objects with veneer teeth.
Where to stay for best clinic access
The two Da Nang Picasso branches are:
Hoang Dieu Street branch: Central Da Nang, close to the beach. Staying in the My Khe Beach area puts you 10-15 minutes by Grab from this branch. This is the recommended area for most patients.
Vinmec Hospital branch: Located in Hai Chau district. Staying centrally (near the Han River bridge area) gives reasonable access to both branches. If you are specifically using the Vinmec branch, the clinic team will advise on the most convenient hotel area.
Da Nang gives you more to do between appointments than any other dental tourism destination at a comparable price point. The 5-8 day lab period is not dead time — it is a genuine holiday embedded in a treatment trip.
