How long do porcelain veneers last? Lifespan by material

Veneer lifespan guide for UK patients — porcelain vs composite durability table, factors that extend or shorten life, and when to plan replacement after Picasso treatment.

Porcelain veneers typically last 10–15 years with good oral hygiene, night guard compliance if you grind, and regular UK hygienist visits. Emax Press veneers carry a 7-year manufacturer warranty at Picasso. Composite veneers last 5–7 years. The single biggest reducer of veneer lifespan is unmanaged bruxism.

Factors you control — and how much they matter

FactorImpact on lifespanWhat to do
Bruxism without a night guardVery high — can fracture veneers within 1–3 yearsWear a custom night guard every night
Oral hygieneHigh — decay at preparation margins shortens lifespanBrush twice daily, floss daily
Biting nails, pens, or iceModerate–high — point loading chips porcelainStop the habit; treat the veneer like fine ceramic
Eating hard foods on front veneersModerateCut food; don’t use front teeth to break hard items
Regular hygienist visitsModerate — removes bacteria at marginsEvery 6 months minimum
Contact sports without a guardHigh — impact riskWear a sports mouthguard
SmokingLow for the veneer itself; high for gum recessionGum recession exposes preparation margins

Factors outside your control

  • Gum recession with age: As gums recede, the natural tooth root becomes visible below the veneer margin. This is a gum issue, not veneer failure. Management may involve gum graft assessment if significant.
  • Bite changes: Orthodontic tooth movement or jaw changes over time can alter how veneers occlude. Annual check-ups catch this early.
  • Ceramic fatigue: All ceramic materials undergo micro-fracture propagation under cyclic loading over time. This is largely unavoidable but is significantly slowed by a night guard and avoiding excessive biting forces.

When to consider replacement

Replace veneers when:

  • A chip or crack cannot be satisfactorily repaired chairside
  • Gum recession has exposed more than 1–2mm of preparation margin and is affecting appearance or hygiene
  • Shade mismatch between the veneer and surrounding teeth has become noticeable
  • You want a shade or shape change
  • Decay has occurred at a preparation margin and repair is insufficient

Do not replace veneers that are functioning well just because they are old. A well-maintained 12-year-old porcelain veneer may outperform a replacement.

The night guard — the single most important maintenance tool

A custom hard acrylic night guard protects veneers by absorbing grinding forces. It should be replaced every 2–5 years as it wears — the guard takes the damage instead of the veneer. The cost of replacing a guard (£150–£400 in the UK) is trivial compared to replacing a veneer.

See night guards and bruxism for the full clinical guide.
